Red Shirt School of Photography

Whilst researching the history of the National Geographic magazine, I came upon a mention of ‘red shirt school of photography’ and decided to look it up.  This feature first became popular in the 1950s and pioneered by the National Geographic photographers as using strongly coloured clothing made their pictures more effective in print.  Photographers used brightly coloured clothing to enhance drab or earth toned background to focus attention on the subjects.
Nowadays it can mean that a photograph has been set up and can be considered as lacking in originality. Interesting!
